The Heart of Legal LondonExplore the tranquillity of the Inns of Court, one of London's most beautiful spots and home of the legal profession since the 14th century. Who is the only British Prime Minister to have been assassinated? How are the Inns so closely connected to the colonisation of and ultimate independence on the United States of America? Why do barristers wear wigs? And where was Shakespeare's Twelfth Night first performed? We discover the past, the fictional and life as a lawyer today on our wander through the courtyards and gardens of Gray's Inn, Lincoln's Inn and the Temple.
Saxon Dooms To Human RightsA walk through the charming back streets of Westminster covering 1000 years of developments in Trial by Jury, the Right to Silence, the Age of Consent, Divorce and the Right to Vote in the face of tyranny, torture, intimidation and ridicule. Our tour finishes at the new Supreme Court for those who wish to see the highest court of the land in action.
Crime and PunishmentWhipping, mutilation, branding and beheading...and that was for the lucky ones. Our walk through the City of London tells stories of illegality and it's consequences from the Birdcage to Dead Man's Walk. Guaranteed to make you see HMP Wormwood Scrubs in a whole new light! After centuries of draconian punishment the 19th century finally ushered in an era of penal reform, the gradual movement from retribution to rehabilitation theories of punishment, and the eventual abolition of the death penalty in the latter half of the 20th century. This walk includes the Old Bailey where some of the country's most serious criminal trials can be viewed from the public galleries for those who wish to visit before or after the tour.
SUS laws, Scarman and StockwellWe follow the recent history of Brixton from the 1980s riots to the death of Jean Charles de Menezes at Stockwell tube station in 2005. From the introduction of community policing and the efforts to recruit more ethnic minority police officers, to the MacPherson report and alleged misuse of Section 44 of the Terrorism Act 2000. We will see how events in this part of South London have influenced modern policing methods and changes in the law.
Life and Death in the Victorian East EndThe most famous murders in England are probably those of Jack the Ripper in 1888 and we will certainly cover the ground he walked and hear the story of his victims on this walk. But there is much more. What did and didn't the police do to catch him? How would things be different today? And why where there so many women happy to wander off with a stranger when they knew a dangerous criminal was on the loose? The real horror here is not the murders themselves but the lives that East Enders lived daily. This will really put a shiver up your spine.
One For the RoadWhere there are lawyers there are pubs! Join us on a pub crawl and learn a little about the law and booze while enjoying a drink or two en route. And be grateful it's not your last tipple before the gallows! From the Gin Craze to the Temperance Movement to Drinking Banning Orders we look at attempts to curb one of the nation's favourite passtimes-a trip to the local boozer! Of course we include stops at two or three of London's best most historic pubs. This walk usually starts at Temple, Chancery Lane or St Paul's tube.
